THALIA CIVIC LEAGUE, INC. MEETING MINUTES APR 18, 2006
President Jack Garrison called the meeting to order at 7:32 p.m. in the
Thalia Trinity Presbyterian Church Sanctuary by leading the assembly in a
moment of silence for our men and women serving in the armed forces and the
Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes of the Mar 28, 2006 meeting were posted on
the website. Over 100 people were present.
The School Board portion was moderated by Paul Johnson. Each candidate for
the School Board had two minutes to speak. Then the floor was opened to
questions. All candidates were in favor of keeping the Teen Pregnancy
Center operating to educate our future citizens and help them be better
parents.
Ross Vierra was the moderator for the City Council portion. Each candidate
for the City Council had two minutes to speak and then the floor was opened
to questions. A few had strong opinions against off shore oil drilling
sites and Louis Jones spoke in favor of the Question on the ballot to
establish a Redevelopment and Housing Authority to speak to “blight” in our
city. Some candidates were in favor of reducing our tax rates from $1.02 to
86 cents per $100 millage.

posted on
the website and copies were available at the meeting.
Forty people were present. New
people were asked to introduce
themselves; Mike Mason said he had moved here a month ago and was
welcomed.
Treasurer Reg Early reported $7,126.02
in
our account; copy
is attached to these miniutes.
Dr. Ed Haskell, 486-4043, lost
his prescription glasses
between his house and the boulevard.
Todd Tabeshian, 3920
Thalia Dr,
teaches in Portsmouth. His car was paintballed and local teens were
caught.
Dr. Garrison read a thank
you
note from Plaza Volunteer
Rescue Squad for our contribution.
2006 Scholarships – Dick
Kreassig made a motion to allot a maximum of $2,000 split anyway the
scholarship committee sees fit. The
motion was seconded and carried. Five applications were received
last
year and three were awarded (one $1,000 and two $500
scholarships).
Garrison said that Naval Mid-Atlantic
Federal Credit Union
is offering two $1,000 scholarships.
Willis update. By
July 1 our lawsuit will walk out. Willis
says he will live by the code of the City.
The downtown corridor plans to put buildings right to the
sidewalk and
how far will this look go eastward on Virginia
Beach Blvd
toward Thalia?
V.P./Programs Dick Kreassig introduced
Retired Master Chief
John R. Peters, who spoke about the USS Wisconsin, which is in the
Ready
Reserve and can be reactivated within about 4 – 6 months lead time to
return to
service. As taxpayers, we own this
ship. Mr. Peters answered questions and
invited everyone to tour the ship (for free) and the Naval
Museum.
Several men in the audience cruised during
its active service.
The next meeting is Tue, Apr
18, 2006 at 7:30 p.m.
at Thalia Trinity Presbyterian Church with an Open Candidate Forum.
Candidates will also be at the North End
Civic League Open Forum the same night.
City Elections are Tue,
May 2, 2006.
Door prizes donated anonymously were a

THALIA CIVIC LEAGUE, INC. MEETING MINUTES JANUARY 23, 2007
President Carl Swanson called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. in the
Thalia Trinity Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall by asking the assembly to
observe a moment of silence for our troops and leading us in the Pledge of
Allegiance. He acknowledged last year’s officers and thanked them for their
leadership. Minutes of the Nov 28, 2006 meeting were posted on the website
and copies were available at the meeting. Dick Kreassig made a motion not
to read the minutes. It was seconded and passed. Forty-seven people were
present.
V.P./Neighborhood Watch – Todd and Samantha Spencer – Because our
Neighborhood Watch Program has been approved, we received one sign free.
Two additional signs were purchased for $60 each.
Treasurer Jack Garrison – reported a balance of $5,228.67.
Program – In the absence of Officer Leta Kreiger, Officer Policella from
the third precinct spoke about home safety and security. Domestic violence
was #1 in Thalia last year with less than 20 reports. Call the
non-emergency number 385-5000 whenever you see something suspicious. A Home
Security Checklist and Citizen Services Guides were also available. Officer
Policella fielded questions about juvenile activity in our area.
WTKR-TV, Channel 3 newscaster Blaine ________ and his cameraman were
present. He was doing a newscast at 11 p.m. on how one neighborhood was
handling crime.
OLD BUSINESS:
1 – History Fest 2007 is Sat, Apr 28 on the Boardwalk. There is a planning
meeting Thu, Jan 25 at 7 p.m. at Eastern Shore Chapel.
2 – Sat, Feb 10 is the PAHS SCA Love Run/Walk for CHKD from 9 – 11 a.m. in
Thalia.
3 – Willis update.
