The Thalia Garden Club
was organized March 16, 1955 and federated Sept. 21, 1955, with thirty
charter members. Five friends met in the home of Mrs. Harry Paul and
discussed
the idea of organizing a garden club. It was decided to organize and
the
call went out to neighbors to meet on March 2, 1955, for perfecting the
organization.
It was decided that the
club be named the Thalia Garden Club, in realization of its historical
significance. Thalia is a part of the Edward H. Mosely estate known as
"Summmerville Plantation," and appears in the official deed of record
book,
Princess Anne County Court House, dated 1807.
Thalia is rich in history
and legend, for the Indians once paddled up and down its shores, hunted
and fished from dugout canoes. It is said that Black Beard used the bay
and rivers in this area as a hideout, and buried treasures along its
shores.
It is here, many homes
have been built, and it is from these homes Thalia Garden Club takes
its
membership.
The shores of Lynn Haven
River and Thalia Creek are now the sites of beautiful, modern homes.
Much
of the primitive beauty our forefathers saw long ago has been spared
the
march of progress.
